Transferring petroleum while pumping data back to the office - 19/04/11

Linton Fuel Oils has signed a contract with vehicle tracking specialists Navman Wireless, enabling the fuel and lubricants distributor to monitor and improve service delivery while gaining simultaneous efficiency savings.

The deal reflects a broad industry trend towards greater fleet control, facilitated by increasingly advanced telematics technology.

“We consider that it is only a matter of time before vehicle tracking becomes standard in the petroleum distribution industry,” said Graham Binstead, Transport Manager for Linton Fuel Oils.

“With the new system in place, we can deliver enhanced service ahead of the curve, while having access to the numerous savings afforded by vehicle tracking.

“In this industry, reliability is paramount. We were impressed with Navman Wireless’ focus on service provision, in addition to their strong emphasis on research and development – it appears our businesses both rely on refined products.”

Navman Wireless’ system will cover the entire fleet of 44 vehicles, predominantly comprising of tankers, which deliver petroleum products to customers UK wide.

A key driver in Linton Fuel Oils decision was the ability to prove delivery of products. Navman Wireless’ CoNex system integrates with a vehicle’s Power Take Off (PTO) to create a powerful tool in ensuring successful deliveries.

Working in combination with vehicle tracking, CoNex can indicate when, where and for how long a fuel pump has been activated. This data can then be used to calculate if the correct amount of product has been transferred, by referring to the amount of time the pump has been activated.

The PTO will also indicate whether products have been pumped at a specified delivery point, providing real time reassurance and additional security for the valuable commodities on board. “This provides unprecedented transparency and simplicity for both customers and fleet managers,” said Steve Blackburn, European Vice President, Navman Wireless.

Linton Fuel Oils also expects to see many of the additional benefits inherent to vehicle tracking, including; productivity increases, operational cost savings and broader customer service improvements.
